Obituary for Elbert ""El"" Mead
New Bern – Elbert “El” C. Mead, 97, died at his home on Tuesday, October 10, 2017.
He served in the US Army Air Force. Mr. Mead and his wife lived in White Plains, NY for 45 years, where he spent 25-plus years as treasurer/comptroller of County Trust Company. They fell in love with New Bern and moved into their current home in September 1997. He volunteered for several years as bookkeeper for the Craven County Literacy Council, and loved playing golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elbert C. Mead, Sr. and Mary Smith Mead; his son, William Mead; and his brother Arthur Mead.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy R. Mead; two sons, Edward C. Mead (Ellen), Charles E. Mead (Susan); one daughter, Virginia M. Barnish (Thomas); and five grandchildren Patricia Mead, Eric Mead, Kelly Mead, Susan Barnish and Fr. Jeffrey Barnish; and one great grandson Evan Mead.
Memorial service will be held at Pollock-Best Funeral Home 2:30 p.m. Sunday with his grandson Fr. Jeffrey Barnish officiating. Burial will be at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greenwich, CT. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. just prior to the memorial service.
